Suzie Baldwin was born and brought up in deepest Devon, where from an early age she cared for a menagerie of animals, including chickens, hedgehogs, owls, sheep, ducks, squirrels, horses and even ferrets. She moved to Surrey when she married, and went on to have four children. Undaunted, she continued to pursue her interest in animals, albeit in a less rural environment. In their small garden, she and her family enjoyed, chickens, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, and a mynah bird! Not surprisingly, the garden was always full of visiting children.
Suzie set up Golden Valley Poultry in 2006, a business specialising in raising and breeding chickens, including rare breeds. The business quickly became a real success, and Suzie became known as an expert in all areas of raising chickens, holding regular courses to pass on her expertise. She wrote her first book, Chickens, in 2012, as well as a regular column for Country Living. In 2014, Suzie bought her own smallholding in Surrey, where she runs her new chicken breeding business, Hollywater Hens as well as raising a variety of livestock.
